Trump says Canada and Mexico tariffs will go into effect at midnight
President Donald Trump announced that 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico will take effect at midnight, with no further negotiations possible before the deadline. He stated that reciprocal tariffs would begin on April 2nd. Trump encouraged Canada and Mexico to build their car plants in the United States to avoid these tariffs, emphasizing the U.S. as their primary market. He also mentioned an additional 10% flat tariff on Chinese goods, on top of existing ones. The president cited border security and fentanyl as primary reasons for the tariffs on North American neighbors. Separately, Trump discussed a disagreement with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky regarding a mineral deal, which did not result in a signed agreement. He expressed that Zelensky should be more appreciative of U.S. support and suggested Europe should contribute more. Trump also hinted that Zelensky might be replaced if a peace deal with Russia is not reached, believing both Russia and Ukraine desire an end to the conflict. The president also teased external tariffs for U.S. farmers in April.
