Pope appears on hospital balcony to bless crowd in 1st public appearance in battle with pneumonia

Pope Francis has returned to the Vatican after a five-week hospitalization for life-threatening double pneumonia. The 88-year-old pontiff, who was admitted on February 14, appeared frail but received supplemental oxygen during his journey home. On his way back, he made a surprise stop at his favorite basilica, St. Mary Major, to pray before the Salus Populi Romani icon. This public appearance brought relief to many who feared for his life or the possibility of another papal resignation. Doctors have prescribed two months of rest and recovery, during which he should avoid large gatherings and exertion. Francis's hospitalization was the second-longest in recent papal history, following John Paul II's 55-day stay in 1981. The pope experienced two acute respiratory crises, requiring mechanical ventilation and manual aspiration of mucus. Despite these challenges, he remained conscious and cooperative. His personal physician expressed hope that he might be able to travel to Turkey in May. While no upcoming appointments have been confirmed, his recovery is being closely monitored by the Vatican and the faithful worldwide.
