Vance and wife to tour US military base in Greenland after diplomatic spat over uninvited visit

U.S. Vice President JD Vance accused Denmark of underinvesting in Greenland's security during a visit to the U.S. military base at Pituffik Space Base. Vance stated that Denmark has not done a good job by the people of Greenland and that the U.S. must take a significant position to ensure the island's security, encouraging Greenland's independence. This statement comes as President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in the U.S. taking over the Danish territory. Greenlandic and Danish officials have reacted negatively to Vance's remarks and the broader U.S. interest in the island. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen defended Denmark's defense contributions in the Arctic and emphasized that Greenland belongs to its people. Denmarks ambassador to the U.S. acknowledged that more could be done to strengthen ties and Arctic security. The U.S. delegation's visit was scaled back due to an uproar over the original itinerary. Greenlandic politicians recently formed a new coalition government, partly in response to U.S. interest in the territory. Vance stressed that the U.S. aims to ensure Arctic security and lead in the region, citing growing Chinese and Russian interest. Trump stated that Greenland is vital for world peace and that Denmark and the EU need to understand its importance. Vance suggested a "Donald Trump style" deal would be necessary to secure the territory and the U.S. Vance also affirmed the right of Greenlanders to determine their own future.
