FBI arrests a Milwaukee judge accused of helping a man evade immigration authorities

Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Hannah Dugan was arrested by the FBI on Friday, accused of aiding a man in evading immigration authorities. Protesters gathered outside the FBI on Saturday, chanting slogans and holding signs in support of immigrants and Dugan. The incident has intensified a conflict between the Trump administration's immigration crackdown and local authorities. Dugan is accused of escorting a man, Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, and his lawyer out of her courtroom through a jury door after learning that immigration agents were seeking his arrest. Flores-Ruiz was apprehended outside the courthouse. President Trump's administration has accused state and local officials of obstructing immigration enforcement. Dugan's attorney stated that her arrest was not in the interest of public safety and that she regrets it. Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers criticized the Trump administration's rhetoric against the judiciary. Court documents suggest Dugan was visibly angered by the presence of immigration agents. Flores-Ruiz was in court for charges of domestic battery and had previously been deported in 2013. The case draws parallels to a similar incident involving a Massachusetts judge during the first Trump administration. The Justice Department has previously directed prosecutors to investigate state and local officials who obstruct federal immigration efforts.
