Former Vice President Mike Pence given the ‘Profile in Courage’ Award
Former Vice President Mike Pence was awarded the Profile in Courage Award at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum for his refusal to overturn the 2020 election results. The JFK Library Foundation recognized Pence for prioritizing the constitutional transfer of power over President Donald Trump's requests on January 6, 2021, an action that put his career at risk. During his acceptance speech, Pence described January 6th as a tragic day that ultimately became a "triumph of freedom" and affirmed his belief that he did his duty to uphold the peaceful transfer of power. The Profile in Courage Award, named after John F. Kennedy's book, honors U.S. senators for acts of bravery. John F. Kennedy's grandson, Jack Schlossberg, and daughter, Caroline Kennedy, praised Pence for his actions, with Caroline stating that his bravery "saved our government." Pence, however, shared credit, emphasizing that the institutions held because leaders from both parties prioritized the country. He expressed gratitude for the support he has received from Americans who believe the Constitution serves as common ground. Pence also praised everyday Americans, stating that their hard work and integrity are what truly make the country great.
