Supreme Court allows Trump ban on transgender members of the military to take effect, for now

The Supreme Court has permitted the Trump administration's ban on transgender military members to be enforced while legal challenges continue. This policy presumes transgender individuals are disqualified from service and could lead to the dismissal of experienced personnel. The court's liberal justices dissented. President Trump's administration argued that the gender identity of transgender service members conflicts with military readiness. Following the Supreme Court's order, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth indicated a move away from policies perceived as "woke." Several federal judges had previously ruled against the ban, citing its discriminatory nature and potential harm to long-serving members. Despite these rulings, the Supreme Court's decision allows the ban to remain in effect. LGBTQ+ rights groups have condemned the ruling as a "devastating blow" and a policy driven by prejudice rather than military necessity. The ban, which has no exceptions, is similar to a previous policy that was later reversed by President Biden. Thousands of transgender individuals serve in the military, making up less than 1% of the total force.
