Democrats ‘storm’ ICE prison, Newark mayor arrested at fiery protest
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested for trespassing at the Delaney Hall Detention Center, a facility used by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The arrest occurred during a protest against the ICE prison, which also involved Democratic members of Congress. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), two members of Congress, Representatives Rob Menendez and Bonnie Watson Coleman, "stormed" the prison's gate and entered a guard shack. DHS stated that this action endangered law enforcement agents and detainees and that the facility's permits are valid. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was warned multiple times to leave the premises before being taken into custody. Representative LaMonica McIver was also present and was heard protesting her treatment during the incident. The National Republican Congressional Committee criticized the Democrats involved, questioning if their party supports such actions. Following Baraka's arrest, Representative Menendez claimed ICE used intimidation tactics and accused the administration of lying about targeting only criminals for deportation. Baraka is also a candidate for New Jersey governor in 2026.
