Anti-ICE protesters clash with police in LA after wave of raids

Anti-ICE protesters clashed with police in Los Angeles following a series of Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids. The demonstrations, some of the most intense against the Trump administration's deportation efforts, saw officers in tactical gear deploying tear gas and pepper balls against protesters who attempted to block ICE vehicles. Angelica Salas, director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights, criticized the raids as random sweeps conducted without warrants, leading to the detention of over 45 people. During the protests, Service Employees International Union California President David Huerta was injured and detained by police, with U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli stating that impeding federal agents would result in arrest and prosecution. Mayor Karen Bass condemned the raids, calling them terrorizing and disruptive to community safety, while Governor Gavin Newsom labeled the sweeps as reckless and cruel, aimed at meeting arbitrary arrest quotas. The Los Angeles Police Department has stated it will not assist in mass deportations or determine immigration status, despite issuing unlawful assembly alerts. Los Angeles had previously declared itself a sanctuary city, prohibiting the use of its resources for immigration enforcement.
