London-bound Air India flight with more than 240 aboard crashes after takeoff from Ahmedabad, India
An Air India plane bound for London crashed in Ahmedabad, India, shortly after takeoff, killing 241 people on board and leaving only one survivor. The aircraft, an Air India flight 171, struck a residential area and a medical college, bursting into flames. The sole survivor, identified as Vishwashkumar Ramesh, was thrown from the plane and sustained multiple injuries but is reported to be out of danger. Security camera footage and eyewitness accounts suggest the plane descended rapidly after takeoff and split in two before crashing. The crash resulted in the deaths of at least five medical students on the ground, with many bodies charred beyond recognition. This incident marks the first crash of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner and is one of India's worst airline disasters in decades. Indian authorities, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, have expressed their condolences and are focused on rescue and recovery efforts. The flight had 169 Indian, 53 British, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian passenger, in addition to 12 crew members. Boeing stated it is gathering more information, while aviation experts are examining flight data to determine the cause of the crash.
