The man suspected of shooting two Minnesota lawmakers, killing one, remains on the loose
Vance Boelter, the man suspected of killing a Minnesota lawmaker and wounding another, has been arrested and charged after surrendering to police. Boelter is accused of fatally shooting former Democratic House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, and also shooting Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette. The massive, nearly two-day search for Boelter was the largest manhunt in the state's history. Authorities located Boelter in the woods near his home after finding his abandoned vehicle. He surrendered to officers crawling out to them. Boelter allegedly posed as a police officer and even altered a vehicle to resemble a police car. A list of prominent state and federal lawmakers, community leaders, and abortion rights advocates was found in writings recovered from the fake police vehicle. Boelter had texted friends to apologize for his actions, stating he would be gone for a while and might be dead. The shootings occur amidst a backdrop of increasing political violence nationwide. Governor Tim Walz stated that one man's unthinkable actions have altered the state of Minnesota. The surviving Hoffman couple sustained multiple gunshot wounds and are recovering, with Yvette Hoffman expressing gratitude for the public's support.
