US officially leaves the World Health Organization

The United States officially withdrew from the World Health Organization on January 23, 2026, fulfilling President Donald Trump's intention announced on January 20, 2026. This decision stemmed from the WHO's perceived failures during the COVID-19 pandemic, its inability to enact reforms, and its alleged lack of independence from member states' political influence. President Trump also cited the financial burden of WHO membership, claiming the U.S. was overcharged compared to other nations, particularly China. Following the withdrawal, all U.S. government funding to the WHO has ceased, and American personnel and engagements with the organization have been suspended. The WHO expressed regret over the U.S. departure and stated that the U.S. was obligated to settle outstanding financial commitments. However, the State Department indicated that no further payments would be made, citing the high cost to U.S. taxpayers due to the WHO's pandemic response. The withdrawal process required a one-year waiting period after the initial announcement.
