Alex Jeffrey Pretti, the Man Shot by Agents, Was a Nurse and U.S. Citizen

Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen with no criminal record, was fatally shot by Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis. Pretti was a registered nurse and worked in the intensive-care unit at the Veterans Affairs hospital. Colleagues described him as capable, competent, friendly, and deeply caring about his patients and work. He had a firearms permit and was known to be passionate about mountain biking and spending time with his dog, Joule. Neighbors and colleagues also highlighted his kind, unoffensive, and nonviolent nature. Pretti was encouraged to pursue nursing and saw it as a way to be helpful and a force for good. He was also interested in social justice and fairness, leading him to be out protesting and observing. His family members did not respond to requests for comment.
