National Park Service removes slavery exhibit in Philadelphia

The National Park Service has removed an exhibit on slavery at the Presidents House Site in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The exhibit, which focused on the nine enslaved individuals who lived at the site during President George Washington's residency, was removed due to President Donald Trump's executive order, "Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History." This directive, issued in March 2025, aimed to eliminate historical displays perceived as promoting partisan ideology or falsely reconstructing American history. Trump's order stated that a "revisionist movement" seeks to undermine the United States' achievements by portraying its founding principles negatively. The Philadelphia exhibit had been in place since 2010. Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, citing a cooperative agreement that allegedly requires mutual consultation before making changes to exhibits. Representative Dwight Evans (D-PA) has condemned the removal as an "outrage" and an "abuse of power," accusing the administration of attempting to "whitewash history" and expressing support for the city's lawsuit to reinstate the exhibit.
