Trump signs executive order for America 250 IndyCar race in DC

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to hold an IndyCar race on the National Mall in Washington D.C. The event, named the "America 250" or "Freedom 250 Grand Prix," is scheduled for August 21-23 and will honor the country's 250th anniversary of independence. This initiative, spearheaded by the organization Freedom 250, aims to celebrate American motor racing and is expected to draw significant tourism revenue to the city. The race will be free to the public, offering spectators views of iconic monuments like the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial. The executive order directs the Interior and Transportation departments to collaborate with Mayor Muriel Bowser on planning the grand prix. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum highlighted the potential economic impact, predicting full hotel occupancy during the race weekend. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy noted that this would be the first race in the capital city since a horse race in 1801. While the White House believes congressional approval for advertising on Capitol grounds may not be necessary, the race could still require sign-off. Roger Penske, owner of IndyCar, expressed his excitement about bringing the sport to the nation's capital, comparing it to the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
