Iran War Powers resolution to curb Trump's military authority fails in Senate

The U.S. Senate has failed to pass a resolution that would have limited President Donald Trump's authority to conduct military operations in Iran without congressional approval. The measure failed on a 47-52 vote, with some Republicans and Democrats opposing it. Republicans largely view the current operation, dubbed "Operation Epic Fury," as a necessary short-term response to Iran's threat and resistance to diplomacy. Senator Joni Ernst emphasized the mission's importance for American safety and security, stating it aims to prevent Iran-backed terror. The U.S. military is reportedly working to control Iranian airspace and neutralize its navy following strikes that killed Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Democrats argue that this operation, which has no set end date and has resulted in American casualties, constitutes a declaration of war, a power exclusively held by Congress. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized President Trump's actions, questioning his motives for potentially initiating a war. The House of Representatives is also expected to vote on a similar war powers resolution, which Speaker Mike Johnson anticipates will also fail, arguing it would undermine U.S. forces and the Commander in Chief's ability to ensure safety.
