Who is Sen. Markwayne Mullin, Trump's new pick to lead DHS?
President Trump has announced his selection of Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., to lead the Department of Homeland Security, replacing Kristi Noem. Mullin, who has served in Congress since 2013, is a close ally of Trump and a strong proponent of the administration's immigration policies. He has previously served in the House of Representatives and was elected to the Senate in a special election. Mullin is an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation and the first tribal citizen in the Senate since 2005. His committee assignments include Appropriations, Armed Services, Indian Affairs, and Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. Prior to his political career, Mullin had a background in construction, hosted a home improvement radio show, and was a mixed martial arts fighter. He will replace Noem, who has overseen a significant crackdown on immigration. Trump stated that Mullin will work to secure the border, stop migrant crime, and end the drug trade. Mullin expressed his commitment to safeguarding the American people and defending the homeland. His Senate seat will be filled by a gubernatorial appointment in Oklahoma, with the appointee serving until January 2027.
