U.S. to Allow Russian Oil Tanker to Reach Cuba, Breaking Blockade
The United States Coast Guard is permitting a Russian oil tanker, carrying approximately 730,000 barrels of crude oil, to reach Cuba. This action effectively breaks an oil blockade that the Trump administration had been enforcing since January. The tanker, owned by the Russian government, was nearing Cuban territorial waters and was expected to arrive at its destination by Tuesday. Its arrival is anticipated to alleviate an accelerating energy crisis in Cuba, providing the island nation with at least a few weeks of fuel reserves. This development also reduces pressure on the Cuban government, which is facing economic difficulties and threats from Washington. The tanker's journey signifies that Cuba can still rely on Russia as an ally. The Trump administration had previously threatened nations sending fuel to Cuba and had escorted a tanker away from the island. Despite having two cutters in the region capable of interception, the U.S. administration did not order them to act, indicating the Coast Guard's plan to allow the tanker to proceed.
