Swalwell to resign from Congress over assault allegations
U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., announced his resignation from Congress following multiple allegations of sexual assault. A former staffer accused him of sexual assault, and three other women alleged he made unwanted sexual advances and sent explicit photos. Swalwell apologized for his past mistakes in judgment but stated he would fight the serious, false allegations. The U.S. House Ethics Committee has launched an investigation into the claims. Swalwell cited efforts for an immediate expulsion vote against him as a reason for his departure, expressing concern that the allegations were distracting him from his duties. A special election will be held in California's 14th Congressional District to fill the vacancy. Swalwell was also a frontrunner in the California gubernatorial race but dropped out; his name will remain on the primary ballot as the withdrawal deadline had passed. He expressed his commitment to ensuring his staff can continue serving his constituents during the transition.
